Urban Styles

BRIEF
DESCRIPTION OF THE DIFFERENT STYLES
|
|
LOCKING
- Fast, sharp hands and arm movements flexing
and pointing in all directions accompanied by
some fancy footworks. The distinguishing "move"
is the "lock position" (bent arms on
the sides). Pure funk, particularly music of the
afro-americans in the 70's, lots of style and
grace, animated moves and improvisation, jolly
character make up the whole dance system. Created
in Los Angeles 30 years ago by Don Campbellock
with his group the LOCKERS, this will become the
progenitor of present Hip hop vertical dance style.
POPPING
- Abrupt contraction of the muscles particularly
of the arms, shoulders, abdomen, neck and leg
articulations specifically the knees to produce
spasmic blocked movements. The idea is similar
to robotic dance, but on rhythm (on the beat particularly).
Popping is a vital element in the Hip hop dance
culture, be it in the "Old" or "New
School" vertical style. |

Electric
Boogaloo is a style of Popping, (also the name
of the group who invented it), originally created
by the Solomon brothers (Boogaloo Sam and Popin
Pete) from Fresno, California. The idea is flexing
or extending of bone articulations smoothly or
in a snapping manner to create an image of electric
current running through the body or making the
appearance of "boneless" movements.
Body and arm waves, floats are all basic
Electric Boogaloo stuff.
BREAKING-
Ballistic stylist floor dance with a lot of attitude
that mixes gymnastics, capoiera and martial arts'
movements, specializing in spins (head, back,
hand etc..), spectacular footworks and aerial
freezes. Breaking, originally known as B-boying,
along with the unique music, is the central ingredient
of the whole Hip hop culture. Born and developed
with the music in the early 70's in the East Coast
(New York), bboying upholds the original spirit
of hiphop, with the bboys/bgirls as its faithful
supporters. The Rock Steady Crew is a solid-rock
foundation to bboying. |
HIPHOP
- A modern flashy type of dance that basically
combines different funk styles and jazzy groove
with a lot of attitude on latest hiphop music.
MTV is practically filled with this kind of dance.
Accents are given to spasmic movements , weaving
hand/arm gestures, and soft upper body parts'
wavy and isolated movements, sliding feet motion.
HOUSE - A type of urban dance concentrated
more on foot-movements with funky attitude which
is very popular in New York mixing different dance
styles from salsa, uprocking, jazz, tap, jazz
rock, and others, performed on House (electronic-styled)
music. The word comes from "Warehouse",
where the music and style primarily evolved in
the early part of the 80's. |
